The Ivory Foundation develops projects for people living with HIV/AIDS, and for the prevention of the virus. In Southern Africa, community gardens have been established in a number of support groups for people with HIV.
-In Botswana, Ghanzi hospice’s garden is maintained by an association of people living with HIV/AIDS. Each month, a regional coordinator, is going on site to train people to permaculture practices and deliver biochar for the maintenance of the gardens.
The crops are used in the canteen of the hospital.
3 days per week a coordinator maintains the garden and answers questions from patients. The crops are used in the meals served to patients.
-Another demo-garden has been implemented with “Fundzisa Live”, a local association of women living with HIV, where six coordinators have been trained and can train communities (= rural groups) upon request. The crops are used to prepare meals and are shared between members.
The Ivory Foundation provides logistical and financial support for the set up and maintenance of these gardens and organizes training sessions provided by local coordinators for the members of the community or surrounding communities.
